What do you need?
By Reverend Pamela M. Joy

Are you in a place of “need” either emotionally or financially? Are
you one of those people who don’t have enough for yourself, and
constantly give what you do have away to others in need. Are you
a kind and considerate person, who is always giving of yourself,
even when you yourself are in need?

Are you constantly putting others wants and needs before your
own. If someone asked you for money to buy food, would you give
them your own rent money so they could buy something to eat?
Do you feel over burdened, and yet you continue to give of
yourself to others, even though you yourself are in desperate
need?

You are a wonderful, caring person who goes out of your way for
fellow human beings. This world is a much better place because
you are in it!  What might this world be like if only there were more
giving, caring people in it like you? It could be quite a paradise,
couldn’t it?

Church teaches us to give unto others. In fact the “Golden Rule”
teaches us to love others as ourselves. Let’s take another look at
just how that is worded “Love others as yourself.” It says, “Love
others AS yourself.” not, instead of yourself. Yes, it’s important to
give to others and to help them when and how you can. It’s
important to help yourself too. It’s important to show yourself the
same love and respect that you’ve been showing to everyone
except you.

You are a kind, caring and wonderful person, who
deserves to be treated with love and respect. Start treating
yourself with the same caring and giving attitude that you’ve been
showering everyone else with.  When you give away too much,
you are giving others the message that you don’t want or deserve
these things for yourself. And, you’re giving the Universe (God,
the Cosmic Forces etc.) the same message.

If God is constantly trying to give you what you need, but you’re
constantly giving it away, that’s kind of like saying to God, “Gee,
thanks for the help, but I don’t want it. I don’t deserve it. Give it to
someone else.” Then guess what God does? You notice that
everyone around you somehow gets what they need, everyone
except you!

I’m not saying to stop being a loving, caring person, I’m saying, it’s
okay to start giving to yourself too! You need it. You deserve it.
Give to others of your extra, not of what you yourself really need.
Start putting yourself first once in awhile. The more you give to
yourself, the more you build yourself up and make yourself strong,
the more you will have to give to others. The more you do this, the
more extra you will have, and the more freely you will be able to
give to others without hurting yourself.
